CSA Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest with 6 cavalry companies joined Gen. Charles Clark, Nov. 15, 1861, at Hopkinsville. On reconnaissance learned of USA gunboat Conastoga’s intent to destroy CSA supplies as Canton. They met here Nov. 20 in 7 hours o ship-to-shore combat. Conastoga left. Forrest’s command had stood ground well, first time under fire.

Lt. Gen. N.B. Forrest, Brig. Gen. John H. Morgan, Gen. Braxton Bragg, Maj. Gen. E. Kirby Smith, Brig. Gen. George W. Morgan included in map.
