About the city:

Portola is the only incorporated city in Plumas County. The population as of 2000 was 2227. The city sits on the Feather River. It's known for its rail history of the site of the Western Pacific Railroad Museum

The city hall is located across from the city park and next to the library and post office. There's a nice welcoming bear carving in front and a monument rock stating the incorporation year of 1946.

About the person:

Gaspar de Portola was a Spanish soldier and explorer. Portola was the governor of Baja California, Mexico.

As an explorer, Portola traveled from San Diego to the Bay Area. During the exploration, he and his part explored many communities. Portola was also the founder of both San Diego and Monterey.

Ironically the city is located in a part of California that Portola never explored.
