The artist began with the belief that the community should relate to the artwork, identify with it, and feel ownership. Meehan found relevance in the history of the area and the equestrian theme of the park. He used these elements in collaboration with the project architects to develop an integrated art proposal capturing the spirit of the park and creating a sense of place. The artwork elongates the formally circular drop off area into the shape of a horseshoe. At the apex of the horseshoe-shaped drive, Meehan added a horseshoe marking the entry into the park. At the horseshoe entrance are inscribed the words to “The Tail of the Horseshoe Nail,” a popular childrens nursery rhyme.
For want of a nail the shoe was lost
For want of a shoe the horse was lost
For want of a horse the rider was lost
For want of a rider the battle was lost
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.
