This broken column headstone was interesting because of the two women listed on the headstone. One of the women, Hannah Duke date of death was two years ofter the birth of the second women, Gladys Duke Anderson. We presume that either Hannah was a mother who gave birth to a daughter at age 64 or she was the woman's grandmother. Either way this is a nice headstone in a beautiful cemetery.
In 1874 churches petitioned the United States Government for some land for a non-denominational cemetery. As a result the federal government granted 20 acres to become Mt Olivet Cemetery. The cemetery has been enlarged to 80 acres and currently has 55,154 burial plots and as of 1997 has recorded 26,097 burials.
