He played cricket for the County of Yorkshire and England. In 1938 he played in a test match against Australia, England’s greatest cricketing rivals.
During his career he was always considered to be a great batsman, but a very defensive, slow scoring one.
In this match he scored 364 runs, which was then the highest individual score of all time. This record stood for 20 years, being beaten by the great Garfield Sobers, who was a much more aggressive batsman.
However Hutton still holds the record for an English batsman in test matches.
He batted over a period of 3 consecutive days, his innings lasting over thirteen hours. His advantage was that in this match there was no time limit to the game. Usually test matches are restricted to 5 days. In this match he could take his time and simply concentrate on keeping on scoring. However it was still a great achievement.
Type of documentation of superlative status: Blue Plaque on wall of house of his birth.
