Following the assassination of President William McKinley, on September 6, 1901, many cities and towns erected memorials to honor the slain President. Springfield, MA commissioned the sculptor Philip Martiny to create a suitable monument. The result was striking statue. It consists of a bust of the president on top of a granite pedestal. Next to the pedestal is an allegorical female figure, reaching up with a palm frond in her hand. The figure is meant to represent - Fame. The statue was dedicated in 1908.

Before the statue was moved to its present site it was located on a hill overlooking the Connecticut River in Forest Park.
