This Cathedral was originally organized before Colorado was a State as the Church of Saint John in the Wilderness. Father John H. Kehler arrived by stagecoach on January 17, 1860, met with some of the local miners and held mass two weeks later..and had a fairly large audience-- perhaps due to the fact that he came with two daughters of marriageable age! Denver became incorporated as a City the next year.
The first cathedral was dedicated on November 7, 1881, at the corner of 20th and Welton. That Cathedral was destroyed by a May 15, 1903 fire.
