Display sign reads: "This is one of two octagonal privies that symmetrically flank the main house. Jefferson designed these domed necessaries using the same rules of architectural proportion as the main house. Some features have been restored: chestnut shingle roof, louvered lunette windows, door, and stairs. The child's seat was installed after Jefferson's time."

Therefore a rare brick outhouse designed by a former US president. The inside of one can be seen, while the other is boarded closed.

Poplar Forest is open to the public seven days a week, March 15 through December 15 (closed Thanksgiving Day) between 10AM to 4PM. Admission for the house tour is $14 for adults. The non-profit website with further visit information link .
