This astronomical observatory, with its a 20-inch reflector telescope, is perched on the roof top of the Springfield Science Museum. For over 30 years this telescope has been used by thousands of people to learn more about astronomy. The telescope was designed and built by members of the Springfield Stars Club.
Construction began in 1934 but World War II interrupted the project. In the the early 1960's the Springfield Stars Club restarted construction, which was completed in 1968. The Stars Club donated the finished telescope to the Science Museum and it was opened to the public in May 1972.
