Abraham Rencher was an attorney in Pittsboro. He served six terms in House of Representatives. Rencher was also a Minister to Portugal and the Governor of the Territory of New Mexico. This marker is on Hillsboro Street in Pittsboro near the cemetery where he is buried.

Abraham Rencher was a born near Raleigh, Wake County, N.C., August 12, 1798. He studied at home and attended the "common schools" and Pittsboro Academy. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1822; studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1825. Rencher commenced law practice in Pittsboro.

He then entered politics. Rencher was elected as a Jacksonian candidate to the to the Twenty-first and Twenty-second Congresses as a U.S. Representative, then as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Congresses, and finally as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1829 - March 3, 1839). He declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1838 then was elected to the Twenty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1841-March 3, 1843), once again declining renomination in 1842, this time on account of ill health.

Rencher then served as Minister to Portugal from 1843 to 1847. He was appointed Governor of the Territory of New Mexico by President Buchanan and served from 1857 to 1861. He fianlly retired to his home in Pittsboro, N.C.

Abraham Rencher died in Chapel Hill, N.C., on July 6, 1883. His interment was in St. Bartholomew’s Protestant Episcopal Churchyard, Pittsboro, N.C., where his grave stands today.
