This dyke forms the third point of interest in Earthcache "Campbell’s Hole Volcanic Dykes" GC311VW looking at the dykes in this area.
This dyke follows in the same general direction of the nearby waymarked dykes, but is much thinner close to the cliff with a thickening where it eventually forms an escarpment of about 500mm height and the level of the rock platform increases.
Could there be a relationship between the increased height of the rock platform as we look north and the formation of the dyke? Perhaps the rock platform is underlain by the volcanic rock and the whole platform uplifted as a unit. Maybe the dyke formed earlier than the rock platform and it became a barrier at which the rock platform built up behind. These are the writer's conjectures only. Feel free to dispute and provide alternate explanations! But these conjectures will be further developed at Dyke 4.
It should be noted for personal safety that the rock platform faces strong surges from the ocean and water can flow fast and in high volume across the upper rock platform. Inspection should be timed with calm weather and low tides. Be aware that wave action is unpredictable and large waves "come from nowhere" even on apparently calm days.
