The N.P. Smith Hardware building is significant to the city of Bend as the only remaining wood frame building dating from the earliest period of the city’s development. It is also significant for its association with the pioneer Smith family and with the development of the city of Bend. The building is two-stories with the hardware business on the ground floor and family quarters on the second floor. The hardware store closed about 1930 and a series of business have occupied the ground floor since. The daughter of N.P. Smith still lives on the second floor.
