There are some secular organizations in Coimbra responsible in large part by the sui generis of the city environment of students and which are presented under the name of "Repúblicas".
Its origins go back to the sixth century, by that time Coimbra was an important center of studies, with a growing number of people in order to receive his teachings. It was this sudden increase in school population, which meant that the city was briefly discussed with the needs of accommodation.
To overcome this problem it was created in 1309 by D. Dinis, the royal charter which aims to build houses in the Almedina and should be inhabited by students, upon payment of a lease, the amount would be set by a committee made up of students and "good men" of the city, expressly nominated by the King.
It was therefore from a common type of accommodation, enabling students to minimize the economic burden, which have arisen through evolution, the "Repúblicas" of our day.

The Hymm of the "Real República Ay-Ó-Linda":
A "Ay-Ó-Linda" bacana,
Da vizinhança estimada.
Não deixa passar semana
Que não haja cowboyada.
Se és jeitosa e meiguita
E c,roas "habeas" ainda
Acredita sem reservas
Na maralha d, Ay-Ó-Linda.
Com alegria e com gana,
Em galinhas especializada.
E se há festa além Santana
Lá está representada.
The "Real República Ay-Ó-Linda" was founded in 1949.
This fraterny house is located in Bairro Sousa Pinto, n.º 33.
