In Newport, within the North Burial Ground/Island Cemetery, is a grave site for Ida Lewis, Lighthouse Keeper of the Lime Rock Lighthouse in Newport Harbor.
The grave is located at the south end of the cemetery area, close to the most southern entrance from Farewell Street. The site has a roughly hewn rock and four chain posts, one of which is a little higher and is another marker.
Each of the posts is made as to suggest a lighthouse, with a dark top with a fence-like image in it.
The main stone marker has images of an anchor and two oars. Below this are the following words:
"Ida Lewis
Grace Darling of America
Keeper of Lime Rock Lighthouse
Newport Harbor
Born Feb 25, 1842
Died Oct 24, 1911
Erected by her many kind friends"
Ida Lewis took over the operation of the lighthouse after her father had a debilitating stroke. She continued to operate the lighthouse for other 38 years before passing on herself. She was known for her acts of heroism while on duty and was the most well-known keeper of her time. The following is a wikipedia page of her life.
