Construction of Glendale's $250,000.00 City Hall was begun in 1940 and finished in 1942. The building is described on the city's web site as a mix of Art Deco and Beaux-Arts styles of architecture - I thought it Moderne. Luckily the city of Glendale has the foresight to keep a treasure such as this. Although it has been altered with additions in 1955 and 1977 and the original doors and windows have been replaced, City Hall represents a WPA-Era government building despite modernization. A recent interior renovation uncovered long lost features bringing portions of the interior back to its original splendor.
City Hall is a Glendale Historic Landmark and was determined to be eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places and California Register of Historical Resources.
Albert Hansen was born in 1894, he began practicing architecture in 1928. His works include Schools in Elizabeth Lake, La Crescenta and Montrose, a bank in Sunland, and the Gardena City Hall among others. He passed away in 1982. A biography is available on the City of Glendale's website.
