An eternal flame burns in memory of those who perished on 9/11 and specifically for Melissa Harrington Hughes, a West Springfield native who died in the attack on the World Trade Center.

The flame sits on top of a polished stone pedestal. At the base, each of the four sides contains a plaque.

Inscriptions: ----------------------------------------------- On September 11, 2001 terrorists hijacked four planes. Two were flown into the World Trade Center Towers, leading to their collapse. One was flown into the Pentagon. The other crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. ----------------------------------------------- In the memory of the 2,999 victims who lost their lives on 9/11/01, including 92 Massachusetts residents ----------------------------------------------- In memory of Melissa Harrington-Hughes 5/29/74 - 9/11/01 ----------------------------------------------- To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healty child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; To know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
