A statue depicting the friar who is the main character in a fable that tries to explain the origins of Sopa da Pedra ("stone soup"), a portuguese traditional dish.
According to the fable, a friar came to a village, carrying nothing more than an empty cooking pot. Upon his arrival, the villagers were unwilling to share any of their food stores with the hungry friar. So, the friar filled the pot with water, dropped a large stone in it, and placed it over a fire in the village square. One of the villagers became curious and asked what was he doing. The friar answered that he was making "stone soup", which tasted wonderful, although it still needed a little bit of garnish to improve the flavor. The villager didn't mind parting with just a little bit of carrot to help him out, so it gets added to the soup. Another villager walks by, inquiring about the pot, and the friar again mentioned his stone soup which has not reached its full potential yet. The villager handed him a little bit of seasoning to help him out. More and more villagers walk by, each adding another ingredient. Finally, a delicious and nourishing pot of soup is enjoyed by all!
