The Archdiocese of Anchorage was established on February 9, 1966 from territory formerly in the Diocese of Juneau. The Archdiocese was created as a result of the Pope's apostolic delegate visiting Anchorage following the Good Friday of 1964 earthquake with a magnitude of 9.2 which had caused extensive damage in south-central Alaska, and saw that Anchorage was going to be the center of growth for the state.
The Cathedral is in a mission style with plain lines. The Cathedral is staffed Dominican priests and brothers.
The Cathedral was host to Pope John Paul II on February 26, 1981.
