YACHATS RIVER, OREGON
The mouth of the Yachats River here, though broad, is bounded by lava rocks on its northern bank and lower ground on the south, giving it some containment. The slope here is very flat and shallow giving a wider variation in depth and open sand according to the tides.
The best access is from the south side where there is parking, but no other facilities. It is a pleasant, safe place for children to play in the shallow water. The more adventuresome may explore upstream. There is seldom much driftwood here.
The town of Yachats sits on the elevated, rocky northern bank offering very scenic views. The town has grown a lot in recent years as a retirement and resort community. Fishing off of the lava rocks for several miles north of the river is good for ocean perch.
Here the scenic coast highway, U.S. 101, loops inland to cross the river at a narrower point, then turns west again to snake around the base of Cape Perpetua, the headland that is the highest point on the Oregon coast.
Coordinates are for the parking area on the south side.
