This sign has been used for over 600 years. I suffered something of a decline during Cromwell's Commonwealth years but rose again during the Restoration of the monarchy. The Crown was popular, in part because of its royal reference and but had the advantage of not being too specific by naming either the monarch OR the gender.

And the cushion? When the crown is carried at ceremonial events prior to being placed upon the head of the monarch, it would be carried on a cushion.
