In the pedestrian hearth of one of Miami's most visible crossroads, several bluish glassy boxes are visible on the sidewalk. On closer inspection, one can see they are covering metal electrical boxes, and a plaque on the ground reveals it is a public art project.

ARTIST: WENDY WISCHER

Title: Liquid Measures, 2010
Medium: Hand Cut Blue Mirror Waterglass Tiles
Location: Third Street and Washington Avenue
Wendy Wischer’s work is influenced by the natural environment and linked to the human inhabitance of that environment. Ms. Wischer seeks the connecting threads that exist between the phenomenon of the natural forces and contemporary urban advancements.

Born in Wisconsin 1971, Wendy Wischer lives in Miami, Florida. She received an MFA from Florida State University in 1995 and a BFA from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1993. Wischer creates conceptually based work in a variety of media ranging from photography to sculptural objects, to site-specific installations, video and public works. Much of the work is based on blurring the separation between the intrinsic history of working with nature and the cutting edge of “New Media”. She is the recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Grant, the South Florida Consortium Grant, and the Individual Artist Fellowship from the State of Florida. Wendy Wischer has exhibited nationally and internationally in Florida, New York, California and Minnesota, Spain, the Dominican Republic and Israel.

Liquid Measures includes hand-cut, blue mirror, waterglass tiles that cover three, 4’x4’x4’ electrical boxes and their 4’ pedestals. Inspired by the pattern of the Golden Mean, the eight-foot high, 360’ square foot installation makes reference to the wind and water currents that pass through the area while reflecting the surroundings of the environment and those within it. The tiles have a watery effect and shimmer as viewers walk by, and the lights in the city at night.
