The house was built 1747-1752 for London merchant Richard Chauncey by architect William Jones featuring a carved mahogany staircase, and a drawing room decorated in a Chinese style.

The house featured in the 1995 television version of Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth.

The 1,700-acre park was laid out in the 18th century and features a lake fed by the River Cherwell and the remains of a Roman villa.
