The town of Santiago do Cacém is dominated by its "castelo", which is an old Templar castle that can be reached by road and visited free of charge. There is a pleasant walk round the outside of the walls, with views as far afield as the Atlantic Ocean. The parish church cemetery is within the walls, shaded by lovely cypresses.
