A 'date which will live in infamy' is how President Franklin Roosevelt described December 7, 1941 when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and precipitated the United States' entry into World War II. Congress declared war on Japan on December 8. When Japan forces launched its attack against the Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor, the USS Arizona was immediately hit by a bomb causing a hugh explosion. 1177 crew members died, including 73 Marines.

A memorial to the Marine detachment on the Arizona at Pearl Harbor stands in the Semper Fidelis Memorial Park which overlooks the National Museum of the Marine CorpsClick for related waymark to open in new window at the Marine Corps Heritage Center in Triangle, Virginia, near Quantico MCB.
