Official Description:
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1961 (ELH) THE STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 4 MILES SOUTHWEST OF FALL BRANCH, 3 MILES NORTH OF JEAROLDSTOWN, AT THE TRI-COUNTY CORNER OF HAWKINS, GREENE AND SULLIVAN AND ABOUT 0.25 MILE NORTHEAST OF THE HIGHEST KNOB OF THE BAYS MOUNTAIN LOCALLY KNOWN AS CHIMNEY TOP MOUNTAIN. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE POST OFFICE IN FALL BRANCH, GO NORTH ON STATE HIGHWAY 81 FOR 1.5 MILES TO A SIDE ROAD ON THE LEFT, TURN SHARP LEFT AND GO 5.5 MILES TO A SIDE ROAD ON THE RIGHT, JUST AFTER PASSING A CITIES SERVICE STATION ON THE RIGHT, TURN RIGHT AND GO 1.0 MILE TO A FORK, KEEP RIGHT AND GO 0.05 MILE TO A FORK, KEEP LEFT AND GO 0.15 MILE TO A WIRE GATE AT A HOUSE ON THE RIGHT, PASS THROUGH GATE AND GO 0.45 MILE TO A GAP IN FENCE, PASS THROUGH GAP AND GO 0.05 MILE TO A FORK, KEEP RIGHT, UP HILL AND GO 0.5 MILE TO THE END OF TRUCK TRAVEL. HERE PACK NORTHERLY TO THE TOP OF THE RIDGE, THEN RIGHT ALONG RIDGE TO THE TOP OF THE NORTHEASTERLY KNOB AND THE STATION. THE STATION IS A 4-LEGGED STEEL STRUCTURE, PAINTED ALTERNATE RED AND WHITE IN COLOR AND THE OVER-ALL HEIGHT IS ABOUT 60 FEET. THE POINT OF INTERSECTION WAS A REVOLVING LIGHT ON THE TOP.

The benchmark was observed during a 1.5 mile hike (with 1400 ft elevation gain!) by BSA Troop 48 to Chimney Top. Access is through private property, thus prior permission required to visit. The steel structure and airport beacon are still in place, but out-of-service (electrical cut and removed). The red/white paint has been weatheref off leaving just bare metal. The beacon and structure can be seen from Interstate 81. Coordinates in the official description were surprisingly accurate to be within the base area.
