"On this site stood the home of Josiah Belden, first mayor of the city of San Jose. Belden arrived in California in 1841. He settled in Santa Cruz and in 1844, became a Mexican citizen. By 1848, he had moved to San Jose, where he established a successful general store. In 1850, he became San Jose's first mayor. Following a year long mayoral term and a stint on the town council, Belden, concentrated his energies on real estate and finance. He moved to New York in 1884, where he became a director of the Erie Railroad. Belden's San Jose mansion, built in 1855, surrounded by 11 acres of landscaped grounds.
