The natural hot spring we visited is at the Homestead Crater, the water temperature remains relatively constant at 95 to 96 degrees Fahrenheit. There are several dozen active hot pots near the town of Midway in northwestern Wasatch County. The largest hot pot in this area is the Homestead Crater. This hot spring is over 200 feet in diameter, 55 feet high, and the water inside the crater is over 65 feet deep. A 110-foot-long tunnel provides access to the water for soaking, swimming, and scuba diving.
The Crater began forming about 10,000 years ago. Water from snow melting on the Wasatch Mountains seeped deep within the earth. Two miles below the surface, the earth's interior heated the water and sent it skyward. As it percolated upward, it picked up minerals and they eventually formed the beehive shaped limestone deposit called the Homestead Crater. This beautiful area is an excellent place to visit or stay for a vacation.
