When it first opened in 1861, all grades were taught in the eight classrooms. As neighborhood elementary schools were built, it gradually became St. Albans High School; the current high school was built in 1930, but this building continued to be part of the high school until 1969.
Academy Hall, on the third floor, was used for school and public assemblies. As the largest hall in the county, it served as an enlistment center during the Civil War, as well as a place for the women of the community to roll bandages and put together packages for the men and for fundraising events. Famous speakers of the day, including abolitionists and freed slaves, spoke here often.
School was in session the day Confederate soldiers raided the town in the northernmost action of the Civil War.
The building is now the St. Albans Historical Society Museum.
