In the town with a proud heritage and bearing the same name one would think it was the real deal. Seems it may not be!

Rather than being an authentic Monon line caboose as it appears on the surface it's records actually link it to likely be a former Reading Railroad caboose! It was reportedly built by Morrison International. It was then used on the ELGIN, JOLIET & EASTERN Railroad and renumbered to EJ&E 179. The city of Monon repainted it as MONON 81579.

Well although the city may have pulled a fast one on the paint scheme they did save a great old caboose. It is well cared for and in great shape and for that they should be applauded.
