On the night of May 1, 1863, General Robert E. Lee and General Stonewall Jackson met over a campfire to discuss strategy against the Union army at Chancellorsville, Virginia who vastly outnumbered the Confederate forces. The intersection of Old Plank Rd. and McLaws Dr. was the site of the
Lee-Jackson Bivouac. This next morning when Jackson rode out was the last time the two men would see each other alive.
There are two tall cedars that stand on the corner. A metal plaque mounted on the ground between them reads:
THESE CEDARS,
PLANTED OCTOBER 23, 1937,
COMMEMORATE
THE LAST CONFERENCE
OF LEE AND JACKSON
