Major Ployer P. Hill had a flying career that lasted about eighteen years. Major Hill was best known as a test pilot and is credited with piloting 60 different aircraft. On the 30th of October 1935 May Hill died as a result of injuries sustained during the crash of an experimental Boeing Model 299 aircraft at Wright Flield. The crash occurred due to maintenance error. The Model 299 was the prototype for B-17 Flying Fortress. Major Ployer Peter Hill was buried in Newburyport, Massachusetts, on November 3, 1935.
In 1939 the U.S. War Department named the site of the Ogden Air Depot "Hill Field" in honor of Major Ployer Peter Hill. In 1948, Hill Field was renamed Hill Air Force Base.
I gave the sculpture 3.5 stars. At first I thought the sculpture was made out of painted bronze but as I looked closer I could see that it was made out what I think is pot metal. There was not patina to the areas where the paint had chipped away. Having been stationed at Hill AFB several years ago I know what Major Hill looked like and I don't think the relief looks like him at all but more closely resembles General Eisenhower.
