This historical marker is located on U. S. Route 11 south of Fairfield, Virginia. The McDowell Cemetery is located on Private Property (in the middle of a cow pasture)about 150 yards north of the marker. The Cemetery is located within the confines of a brick wall. The Tall Monument visible above the wall marks the graves of the McDowell Family. There are a number of other graves in this cemetery, some identified and marked while some are marked with simple field stones. I have visited the cemtery twice with the permission of the current property owner and both time the cemetery appeared to be in need of attention. ONCE AGAIN THE CEMETERY IS ON PRIVATE PROPERTY, PLEASE SECURE PERMISSION OF THE CURRENT PROPERTY OWENER BEFORE ENTERING THE PROPERTY. BEWARE OF LIVESTOCK AND IF YOU ENTER THE CEMETERY BEWARE OF SNAKES AND OTHER WILDLIFE!
The historical marker is located in the Southbound Lane of U. S. Route 11 about 1 mile south of Fairfield, Virginia. The marker reads:
"In this cemetery are the graves of Captain John McDowell and seven companions, who were killed by Indians near Balcony Falls, December 14, 1742. This Fight began a war that lasted until 1744.
