The Freeport Center, named for a Utah law that exempted inventory from property taxes, began life during World War II as a Naval Logistics base. The base was established here because it was well inland and right off of the transcontinental railroad route. So much material was moved by rail in and out of the base warehouses that it has its own railroad marshalling yard.
This huge industrial park covers more than a square mile and supports a number of major manufacturing companies plus serves as a major distribution facility for many other enterprises. The Center also supports a large Job Corps training facility.
