The Pilot Butte Canal (or North Canal) is one of two main canals operated by the Central Oregon Irrigation District. The canal begins at the North Dam in Bend northward to the Redmond area. The dam and canal were constructed in 1912. For the first mile the canal follows a nearly flat gradient to this location where it spills over a fault scarp. The total drop is about 40 feet, 30 feet of which occurs in this waterfall. A newer canal (North Unit Canal, early 1940s) also crosses the fault scarp at this location but does so in a deep cut. The falls can be reached by hiking the canal access road from Empire Ave or Boyd Acres Road.
