The mascot for UNM is the Lobo, the spanish word for wolf.

According to the University website, Lobo was adopted as the school's nickname in 1920, and soon after a real wolf was captured to be the school's mascot at the games. It was the responsibility of the cheerleaders to take care of the wolf.
After the harnessed wolf bit a young child at a game, it had to be put down and the school never used a live mascot again.

In the 1960's a human mascot was created name Lobo Louie, followed by Lobo Lucy in the early 1980's. Both are now part of the University's cheerleading squad.

This sculpture of a Lobo is located at Redondo Dr. and Stanford, on the far south end of campus. The wolf is on top of a tall rectangular foundation, along a sidewalk that runs east-west on the south drive. The wolf is leaning forward, with his mouth slightly open. The artist put quite a bit of detail in the neck/facial area of the animal, as well as the haunches. Look closely at the neckline in the photo.

The memorial was dedicated in 1948 (according to the Smithsonian database).
