Bij een schietpartij in winkelcentrum Ridderhof in Alphen aan den Rijn worden op zaterdag 9 april 2011 rond het middaguur vijf mensen in koele bloede doodgeschoten, en er vallen ruim 10 gewonden, waaronder 4 zwaar gewonden. Er worden minstens 100 schoten afgegeven met 3 verschillende vuurwapens. De dader, de 24 jarige Tristan van der Vlis gekleed in in een bomberjack en legerbroek, die hierbij gebruikt maakt van een automatisch geweer, pleegt na deze daad bij de ingang van supermarkt Albert Heijn zelfmoord met een ander wapen. Eén van de gewonden overlijdt later alsnog in het ziekenhuis.
Over het motief van zijn daad tast men nog in het duister.

In Alphen aan den Rijn, around midday, on Saturday April 9th, 2011 a shooting took place at the Ridderhof mall. Five people are shot in cold blood. At least 100 shots were fired with 3 different fire arms. Over 10 peaple are wounded, including four seriously injured. The offender, the 24-year-old Tristan van der Vlis, who was dressed in a bomber jacket and camouflage trousers, used an automatic rifle. After this act Tristan committed suicide with a pistol, at the entrance of a supermarket, before police arrived on the scene. One of the wounded dies later in the hospital.
Officials said van der Vlis left two notes, neither of which gave an explanation for his actions.
The Netherlands has strict gun laws and shootings are rare.
