The bridge was begun in 1950 and was completed in 1955. The bridge is used mainly for freight transport. The bridge consists from 15 arches each 53 meters length with a total bridge length of 921 meters. The total height of the bridge is 19 meters.
The height difference between the two ends of the bridge is six meters, the bridge exceeds the Vltava River, four-lane road to Zbraslav, double track railroad to Pilsen, as well as road to Modrany and rail from Vršovice to Vrany nad Vltavou.
The bridge was built in a time of deep totalitarian communist regime. The building is involuntarily involved many lawyers, philosophers, officials and other intellectuals who were forced to its construction.
