The simple one room school that is now part of Calliope Historical Village dates back to 1872; the interior is furnished with memorabilia that shows what school life was like during the turn of the century. The building was constructed at a cost of $140 on the Adam Scott homestead across the river in what was then known as Dakota Territory. The tiny structure housed 8-14 students, but the school only operated for 60 days a year. It was brought to Hawarden to be part of the re-constructed village for historical purposes. The merry-go-round in the side yard still awaits children who visit. An old fashioned pump can be found on the other side of the school and the outhouse is handy out back.
