With the codes; IATA: SYD, ICAO: YSSY, Kingsford Smith Airport is the only airport serving Sydney, and is a major hub for Qantas. Situated next to Botany Bay, the airport has three runways, colloquially known as the "East-West", "North-South" and "Third" runways. This latter runs parallel to the old North-South, to the east, and is built on land reclaimed from Botany Bay
It is one of the oldest continually operated airports in the world, and the busiest airport in Australia, handling 33.4 million passengers and 289,741 aircraft movements in 2009. It was the 28th busiest airport in the world in 2009. Flights from Sydney link with all states and territories of Australia. Currently 47 domestic destinations are served to Sydney direct.
In 1953 it was renamed Sydney (Kingsford Smith) Airport in honour of Charles Kingsford Smith, a pioneering Australian aviator.
We had a good experience here, flying in from Heathrow via Bangkok, and transfering to our onward flight to Auckland. The staff were helpful and, above all, friendly and smiley. (Unlike our experience in 2009 at Brisbane where there were long faces and we were herded like animals through security and 'corralled' in the departure lounge.)
As to food, etc. We didn't really want any as there had been plenty on the incoming Qantas flight and we were only here for 2hrs or so. Internet, there were some services available, all pay-as-you-go or buy a contract which was transferable world-wide.
For a good history of the airport the Wikipedia site is very comprehensive, see: Sydney Airport
