The Gettysburg Battlefield Historic District is a region of contributing properties of 11,000 acres containing over 1000 historic contributing structures (including battlefield monuments) and 315 historic buildings most of which are on federal property of the Gettysburg National Military Park. Contributing structures include postbellum artifacts such as the Big Round Top Observation Tower Foundation Ruin and the only remaining Tipton Boundary Marker, and many of the contributing properties are privately-owned and were not used for military engagements (e.g., homes near the battlefield used for field hospitals). Commercial development has resulted in construction of non-historic structures on many battlefield areas (e.g., north slope of Cemetery Hill), and county preservation easements against private land "inside the Park boundary" limit exterior changes in exchange for reduced property taxes.
It takes at least two days to visit the entire battlefield. Parking is a snap, free on the side of almost every road. There are countless historic markers, statues, memorials and monuments. It is one of the most amazing and historical locations in the United States and every citizen should make a point to visit this NRHP site at least once in their life.
