On the sidewalk in front of a parking garage on the northeast corner of Robert S. Kerr and N. Broadway in downtown Oklahoma, you will be startled to see something you cannot at first comprehend. After doing a double-take, there is no way you can resist walking over to inspect this phenomena.

You're looking at a creature probably ten feet tall, made of white metal. It is standing on four tall, spindly legs and has hundreds of rods with curly-cues at the end protruding out of its body. Five yellow and orange tentacles curl out of the "head." What more can I say.

The sculptor, Stan Carroll describes his work with words painted on a glass window alongside the organism. It reads:

"Curious Organism / 2009 / Double entendre intended / On one hand, the objective of this piece is to pique public curiosity in the Underground. On the other, the organism exhibits its own tongue in cheek curiosity of the tunnel and its pragmatic elements. The organism's optic nerves and tentacles explore the underground with multi-sensory curiosity. Finally the curious organism is innocently captivated, as we are, by irresistible forces.

"For the more serious observer, the work is a commentary on the mesmerizing effects of mainstream media, in all its forms, and how the media successfully exploits the natural curiosity and vulnerability of the human psyche." Stan Carroll, AIA

Stan Carroll is President of Beyond Metal. He is a hands on designer, sculptor, architect, and designer of furniture and architectural metal specialities. To read more about his work,
