A igreja pertencia a um mosteiro da Ordem de Cister e foi construída na primeira metade do século XIII e reformada nos séculos XVII e XVIII na fachada e no interior das naves.
A cabeceira, o portal e as paredes exteriores das naves datam da construção medieval.
Na nave sul encontra-se o túmulo, do século XV, de Fernão Eanes de Lima, pai de Leonel de Lima, primeiro visconde de Vila Nova de Cerveira.
Está classificada como Monumento Nacional desde 1977.

The church was a Cistercian monastery built in the first half of the 13th century, was reformed in the 17th and 18th centuries, which saw extensive alterations to the façade and the interior of the naves.
It is classified by IPPAR as National Monument since 1977.
