The former Chandler High school is located northwest of the downtown area. It was constructed by the WPA beginning in 1940 and is in the Art Moderne style. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Etched in stone on the school is a quotation by Diogenes Laertius: "The foundation of the State is the education of its youth."

Other sites in this grouping are the Museum of Pioneer History downtown, and the well-preserved ghost signs on the old St. Cloud Hotel. Located in the old State Armory is the Route 66 Interpretive Center, a fascinating hands-on museum of Route 66 history. Also downtown is the H & S Theater, still operating after 85 years.
