San Francisco is a city with many hilly neighborhoods. There are many hidden stairways that connect hillside neighborhoods.
The Esmeralda Stairs are a series of three block long stairways that lead up to the west side of Bernal Heights Park. This upper section climbs from Esmeralda and Elsie Street up into Bernal Heights Park. Posted coordinates are at the bottom of the stairway. These stairs are concrete and shaded by trees until the stairway tops out at Bernal Heights Boulevard, a dirt trail in the park.
At the bottom of the stairs, there's a short block-long street section of Esmeralda connecting to the middle Esmeralda Stairway. This street section of Esmeralda offers parking for access to all three stairway sections.
At the top of the stairs (N37 44.580 W122 25.006), one comes to a roadsized dirt trail in Bernal Heights Park. A short distance away are spacious views of San Francisco.
