This small butterfly garden is next to a
children's playground in
Precita Park. Here you might see Virginia Lady, Red Admirable, Common Buckeye and Anise Swallowtail butterflies. From the Garden for Butterflies sign:
This garden provides habitat for the butterflies present in this part of San Francisco. San Francisco used to be home to approximately 65 species of butterflies; of those only 30 or so species remain. In and around Precita Park 9 or 10 species can be seen using the plants whose chemical qualities attract them.
Most of the different kinds of butterflies you see here will place eggs on certain plants in the garden. The caterpillars that hatch from the eggs will also use those plants as food. Other plants are here for nectar for adult butterflies.
Loss of habitat has made it necessary for wildlife to find new resources. Some weeds and commonly used garden plants now provide these resources for the butterflies we most frequently see.
