NOTE: The monument is on private property. The owners of the houses adjacent to the property don't know the property owner. I was lucky because the property owner happened by when I was looking at it and he invited me onto his property for pictures.

Here is an excert from the NGS history on the benchmark:

01/01/1896 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1896 (WE) ABOUT 1-1/2 MILES
NORTH OF SYRACUSE GROVE, THE TERMINUS OF THE SYRACUSE BRANCH
RAILROAD, IN THE FIELD SOUTHEAST OF A ROAD CROSSING, 51 METERS (167
FEET) FROM THE FENCE TO THE NORTH AND 63 METERS (207 FEET) FROM THE
FENCE TO THE WEST, AND ON PROPERTY BELONGING TO CATO LOVE WHOSE HOUSE
IS ABOUT 350 METERS (1,148 FEET) TO THE EASTWARD. GILBERT PARKERS
HOUSE IS ACROSS THE ROAD SOUTHWEST OF THE STATION, AND JOHN W.
SINGLETONS HOUSE IS DIAGONALLY ACROSS THE ROAD CROSSING TO THE
NORTHWEST. THE STATION IS MARKED UNDERGROUND BY A CROSS IN A COPPER
BOLT SET IN A BLOCK OF SANDSTONE 2 FEET SQUARE AND 10 INCHES THICK,
ABOUT 2-1/2 FEET BELOW THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND. ABOVE THIS MARK IS
A BRICK PIER 4 FEET SQUARE AT THE BASE BUILT TO A HEIGHT OF ABOUT 9
FEET ABOVE THE GROUND. THERE IS AN OPENING IN THE PIER AT THE SURFACE
OF THE GROUND TO GIVE ACCESS TO THE SURFACE MARK, WHICH IS EXACTLY
THE SAME AS THE UNDERGROUND MARK AND IS EMBEDDED IN THE CENTER OF
THE PIER.

Unfortunately, the grove of trees and Syracuse Railroad Station no longer exist, and I am sure that Cato Love, Gilbert Parker, John Singleton, and their houses are long gone also. From reading the description that the builders originally placed about the monument I don't think they intended it to last this long but without a doubt this is one of Utah's oldest structures.

Driving Directions:Exit I-15 on the 1700 South (Antelope Drive) exit and head east. Turn right on 4500 West, monument is located on the right side of the road in an open field behind a chain link fence. Location is just short of 200 South/4500 West intersection.
