William Cowper (1731 - 1800) was born in Berkhamstead and was known for his poetry and hymn writing. He wrote about nature and the countryside. In 1763 he suffered a bout of mental illness having tried to commit suicide on three occasions and was admitted to a private asylum in St Albans. On one occasion he thought that he was condemned to eternal damnation and believed that God wanted him to take his own life. His poetry was known to be rather melancholy.
He died of dropsy.
However interesting this man's tale may be it isn't him.
So how about William Cowper-Temple (1811 – 1888)who was born at nearby Brocket Hall? He was a liberal politician and member of parliament for Hertford. So he would have looked likely. However, it isn't him either. This is not his coat of arms.
As worthy as this Cowper may be, it isn't him either.
It is most likely that this pub sign relates to William Cowper, 1st Earl Cowper, politician and first Lord Chancellor (1665-1723).
The scandal surrounding his brother Spencer's trial for murder led to him him losing his seat in parliament in 1702.
