There are many permanent citations at this Park and all have to do with the suffering and torment brought on by the harsh winter of 1777-78. This one like all the other is on a Revolutionary War monument.

This attributable quote can be found on the New Hampshire Revolutionary War monument, a small stone rounded at the top with a bronze plate bearing the quote. It is the last monument before the huge columns which act a gateway to this historical park. The monument reads:
Long Description:New Hampshire
Appeal to Hon. Meshech Weare, Chief State Official
----------
Valley Forge, January 21, 1778
"Sir-
...Duty obligates me to observe to you the present situation of your soldiers... Paint to yourself this their ragged suffering condition... they look up to me for relief, and it is not in my power to afford them any..."
From Enoch Poor, Brig. Gen'l, Commanding N.H. Forces
