Skid Road is part of this district's name..and shouldn't be confused with Skid Row. Skid Road got its name because loggers skidded their logs down the nearby hills to the mills in Seattle's early days.

The center of the early days of Seattle, this area was thoroughly destroyed by the great Seattle Fire of 1889. A wave of construction required fireproof buildings made of brick...like the Goldsmith Building (whose coordinates were used for this waymark--and the adjacent Chapin Building.)
When gold was found in the Yukon in 1897, this area became the center of activity again...situated between the port and the train station.
The business district started to drift north of here, however, before WWII.
Now the District is a great place to visit. Lots of trendy restaurants. Catch a drink at one of the many bars before a game at nearby Qwest or Safeco Fields. Visit the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park office (WM36EY) in the heart of the District too.
The District was originally listed in 1970...but had its boundaries increased in 1978 and again in 1988.
