Daisy M. Johnson lies in the Mount Hope Baptist Church CemeteryClick for related waymark to open in new window next to Powie M. Johnson. (Although it can be assumed Powie was Daisy's husband, research could not confirm it. Powie could have been her brother, as they are buried in separate plots.) Born in 1906, Daisy died before her 103rd birthday.

Her simple granite marker with two praying hands reads:

DAISY M. JOHNSON
NOV. 4, 1906
JUNE 24, 2009
FAITHFUL TO THE END

When Daisy was born, life expectancy was 48 years. Theodore Roosevelt was president, but women did not help vote him in as they did not have the right. The USA consisted of 45 states.

The average cost of a house was $4500.

Even though cars had been invented, the main mode of transportation was still horse and carriage. Only the richest could afford a car at an average cost of $500. The Wright brothers received a patent in 1906 for their flying machine.

When Daisy died, the US had fought in two world wars. Women's rights had come a long way and women even held powerful positions in government. The country ratified statehood for 5 more territories -- Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska and Hawaii.

House and automobile prices had multiplied more than 50 times. Air travel had progressed to around the world and into space.

Technology would progress far beyond the radio when Daisy was born to television and computers when she died.
